LeRoy Hammett

Mr. LeRoy Hammett, age 89, of Chatsworth, passed away at his residence on Saturday, September 17, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Mr. Hammett is a graduate of Kirkman Vocational High School in Chattanooga, TN., Carson-Newman College of Jefferson City, TN., and George Peabody College in Nashville, TN.  He served in the United States Naval Amphibious Forces during World War 11, was a deacon, sunday school teacher and director  in churches: Woodland Park in Chattanooga, TN.,  Clairmont Baptist  in Atlanta, GA., and Spring Place Baptist in Chatsworth, GA.  He served as an elementary school teacher over 36 years in Georgia counties of Dekalb, Whitfield and Murray. At the age of 19 he became the sole support of his mother and younger sister.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Augustus T. and Ova Cannon Hammett, sister: Flora Mae Cox ,  brothers: Carl and B.F. Hammett.

He is survived by his wife: Betty Sue Harp Hammett of Chatsworth, daughter: Mary Beth Hammett of Chattanooga, son and daughter in law: Nathan Lee and Sandy Hammett of Chatsworth, sister and brother in law: Edna Earle and Raymond New of Trenton, GA., grandchildren: Nicole, Tyson & Lindsay, great grandchild: Sophia and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Mr. Hammett will be on Tuesday at 11 AM in the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Bachelor and Dr. Bob Sampley officiating, Interment will be in Spring Place Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 until 8 PM.  Flowers will be accepted or you may make contributions to Spring Place Baptist Church.
