Sonja Denese Martin

With a Christ-like love, Sonja Denese Brock Martin embraced anyone she came into contact with whether at church, grocery store, doctor’s office, hospital, etc. She did not meet a stranger! She had such compassion for people, to love and to care for each person, that she adopted everyone with whom she came in contact. She did not forget anyone, and if you met Sonja, you would not forget her. 

Sonja was very active at her home church, Smyrna Baptist Church, where she participated in the ladies group, and as a choir member. 

Since the passing of her parents and older siblings, Sonja was the love and glue that held our family together. 

Sonja gained her wings on July 30th, 2020 at her home; she was met with open arms by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was reunited with her parents, Rollie and Georgia Brock, brother and sister-in-law, Clyde & Lillian Brock, sisters, and brothers-in-law Mary & Don Whaley, Sue & Arnold Phillips, Sisters Odell Fossett and Wilma Ruth Brock, and brother-in-law Philip Martin. 

Sonja was born November 26, 1953, and lived in Dalton, GA, and for the last 22 years, she made Chatsworth, GA her home. She graduated from North Whitfield High School in 1972. 

Sonja is survived by her devoted husband, Raymond Martin. She met Raymond, the love of her life when she was 19 years old, and they were married on April 26, 1973. They celebrated 47 happy years together. Sonja is also survived by her brothers Kenneth Brock (Brenda), Joe Brock (Rachel), Richard Brock (Nancy). Brothers-in-law Garnell Fossett, Ronnie Martin and Gerald Martin, sister-in-law Deb (Troy) Brown, Elisa (Lane) Greeson, Patti Martin, and step-daughter Leslie Martin, as well as several nieces and nephews. 

Pallbearers are Allen Fossett, Alan Gibson, Ryan Adams, Tim Brock, Gary Whaley, Chris Fossett.

Sonja’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2020, at Shawn Chapman Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Shawn Chapman’s from 11 am to 4:30 pm followed by the funeral service at 5 pm at  Smyrna Baptist Church and officiated by Brother Andrew Bowen. 

Interment will be at Smyrna Cemetery and officiated by Brother Bruce Fossett.
