James Edmonson Walker Sr. (1937-2025)

James Edmonson Walker Sr., age 88 of Chatsworth, Georgia, passed away at Hamilton Medical Center on Wednesday evening, May 7th, 2025.   He was born April 19th, 1937, in Washington, D.C., son to Charles McGregor and Elizabeth Jane Jewett Walker.

James was a retired foreman of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, where he worked for 27 years.  In 1999, he moved to Chatsworth with his wife Mary and their child Mira, where James became an important member of the community for the last 26 years. A member of Fuller’s Chapel United Methodist, James was a jack of all trades with no time to waste and who never shied away from fixing anything himself.  He couldn’t stay retired long and was soon working at the hardware department of Home Depot, where he helped customers with DIY projects for the next 10 years.  He was a tireless volunteer always ready to lend a hand and was instrumental in building the playground for a local Child Advocacy Center, the Dalton Greenhouse. In his free time, James enjoyed farming, woodworking, hunting, fishing, photography, and watching old westerns.

James is survived by his wife of 46 years Mary R. Walker; children April Culbreth (husband Zane), Robin Jordan (husband Audi), James Walker II (wife Donna), and Mira (partner Bryan); grandchildren Chelsea Walker, James Walker III, Marlena Payton, Savannah Campbell, and Lacy Walker, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son John Walker, brother Charles Walker Jr, sisters Maxine Richards and Dee Johnson, and his former wife Marlene Davis (mother of April, Robin, James, and John).

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Shawn Chapman Funeral Home, 2362 Highway 76, Chatsworth, GA 30705. The Family Memorial will be from 10 to 11 a.m.
