Edith was born to Henry and Mary Russell on December 26, 1930, in Murray County Georgia. She was their first child and had six younger siblings. She was married to Joseph Huitt in 1950. The marriage ended in 1960.

She was a member of the Welcome Hill Baptist Church of Dalton, Georgia, and later of Deep Springs Baptist church in Dawnville.

She is preceded in death by her father, Henry Washington Russell, and his wife Mary Ellen Bain Russell; siblings, Ressie Caldwell and Gearldine Vaughn Brookshire; husband, Willard Stephens and grandson Tommy Peterson.

She is survived by her daughters, Ramona and husband Reed Elrod of Gainesville Georgia, Dora Faith Peterson of Dalton Georgia, and Charlotte Huitt of Los Angeles California; siblings William and wife Shirley Cowart Russell of Chatsworth, Georgia; Esther Davis Scott of Resaca, Georgia; Dessie Fowler of Chatsworth, Georgia; and Gail Weinthal of Anniston, Alabama; grandchildren, Bree Faith of Dalton, Danielle Peterson Woods of Douglasville, Georgia; Joseph Elrod and wife Emily LeCount Elrod of Warsaw, Indiana; Andrea Elrod Martin and husband Scott C. Martin of Cleveland, Georgia;13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces. and nephews.

Edith will always be remembered for her hard work, wit, and her positive and adventurous personality.

A service to honor the life of Edith Stephens will be noon Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Welcome Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Vaughn and Rev. Scott Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Shed Cemetery 2077 Horns Creek Road Ocoee TN. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Welcome Hill Baptist Youth.
