Charles Thomas Carmical Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of Charles T. Carmical, Sr. announce his death on Saturday, March 3 rd
after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Born in Chattanooga on November 20, 1942, his family settled in Dalton in the late 1940s and became
part of the fabric of his community. Growing to a height of 6’6 Charles was the high school Georgia
Player of the Year and was recruited to play basketball at South Georgia College. His most significant
accomplishment during college was meeting the love of his life Bobbie Allen who would become his
wife. They married in 1963 and their first son Chip was born in 1964 followed by sons Lee and Joel.
Charles was the owner and operator of Dalton Auction Company. Started by his father in 1959, Charles
was moving furniture before he could drive and continued to rearrange the store until the end. He loved
to make a deal and work with people. Even when his illness became overwhelming, he would sit in the
store with his grandsons talking shop and serving customers.
With a lifelong love of learning, Charles had many interests, particularly church history, Christian
philosophy, and the Atlanta Braves. He taught the Men’s Sunday school class for many years at Christ
Church Presbyterian Church where he was a Ruling Elder, Deacon, and member for over 55 years.
As a longtime Boy Scout Master, Charles mentored hundreds of scouts with adventures in Federal parks
throughout Georgia. During his tenure with Troup 2, 31 scouts reached the rank of Eagle including all
three of his sons. He was known as a gentle giant with endless patience until he stepped on the
basketball court where all bets were off. He played throughout his adult life with the Golden Boys
winning the Georgia State Title 12 times, two Tennessee State titles, and the bronze medal at the Senior
Olympics Ohio Nationals in 2012. He was known as the big man with a soft touch, except for his elbows.
At his core, Charles was a family man. Those who knew him know that he had everything he ever
wanted in the life he and his wife Bobbie created throughout their nearly 60 years of marriage. He loved
the Lord and shared his love of Christ throughout his community with his generous heart for strangers
and his many lifelong friendships.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie Allen Carmical, sons Charles T. Carmical, Jr. (Kathleen), Lee Allen
Carmical (Molly) & Joel Asher Carmical (Maki), Grandchildren Charles T. Carmical, III, Henry D., Sara
Grace, Emma, Benjamin, and Laila, brothers Billy Carmical and Bob Carmical.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at noon at Christ Church Presbyterian
followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Anna Shaw
Children's Institute. https://www.hamiltonhealth.com/about/whitfield-healthcare-foundation/donate/
